Read along with Moxie on Netflix
Riot Grrrls of the world will rise again in the month’s biggest adaptation on Netflix. The great Amy Poehler directs and stars in "Moxie," a Netflix film based on a novel by Jennifer Mathieu. The book and movie tell the story of Viv, a modern-day teenager raised by a mom who once raged as a tough-as-nails, punk rock Riot Grrrl in the 1990s. Inspired by her mom, Viv starts a feminist zine that she distributes anonymously to her classmates and starts a revolution in her high school. The real-life Riot Grrrl movement exploded in the Pacific Northwest but spread around the world, inspiring fans with a potent mix of punk rock, feminism, and political activism. When asked to describe her book in three words, Mathieu replied: “Teen Feminist Army.”The book and film should inspire a new generation to check out rock bands like Sleater-Kinney and Fea, as well as the feminist writers who inspired these Riot Grrrls to make music, zines, art, and activism.Read Moxie on Fable and watch the trailer for the Netflix show!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sf34qI1hjKUMore great books that are movies to read and stream
There are lots of new shows and movie adaptations from great books—streaming across platforms, from Hulu to Apple TV to Netflix to Amazon.
Cherry by Nico Walker (Apple TV)
A young medic returns from deployment in Iraq to two things: the woman he loves, and the opioid crisis sweeping across the Midwest. In this “miracle of literary serendipity” (The Washington Post), after finding himself deep in the thrall of heroin addiction, the soldier arrives at what seems like the only logical solution: robbing banks. In a GQ interview, Nico Walker admitted he might not watch the movie."I’ve seen a little bit of the film. I’m not really trying to see it. I guess the main reason is I have my own idea of what that story is, and I don’t want to replace it with somebody else’s version. I know that’s kind of selfish."

Beloved (Hulu and Amazon)
Oprah Winfrey starred in this movie adaptation of Toni Morrison’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel that shows how the trauma and suffering of American slavery reshaped the lives of Black families in the 1800s. The mother’s enduring love at the heart of this novel burns with an incandescent power that remains undiminished three decades after its publication.“More so than almost any other novel of the twentieth century, Beloved is both peerless in its poetic language and transcendent in its ability to capture the complexities of race, incorporating elements of the ghost story, slave narratives, and magical realism.”
That’s what author Joe Meno wrote about this classic novel in his Magical Realism 101 Folio on Fable. Check out our other Fable Folios while you're there too!Now read Beloved on Fable and watch the trailer!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAsnKghD2uw
The Glorias (Amazon)
This movie adaptation from "My Life on the Road," Gloria Steinem’s moving, funny, and profound memoir about her life and the growth of a revolutionary movement for equality. The book explores a lifetime spent on the road, listening and deeply connecting with people as part of a movement that would change the world. The message of the film has never been more important, as Steinem stressed in an interview with "The Washington Post:"“I think we need to understand that there are economic powers that run counter to democratic person-by-person power... once we have a majority change in consciousness, which we have had, there comes a backlash. I fear that sometimes we have a victory and we relax, instead of understanding that the most dangerous time is after a victory."
