Hello to all the Fiction-Speculative-Dark-Anchored (FSDA) readers! You can find your BookAura by tapping the “Summary” tab of your profile. A BookAura describes your personality as a reader, based on four key dimensions of your reading life. Over the next few months, I’ll be writing about what makes each of Fable’s sixteen BookAura reading types unique, but I wanted to start with you.

What does it mean to be an FSDA?

FSDA is the most common reading style on Fable, bringing together thousands of readers who love stories set in fictional worlds brimming with imaginative possibilities. These readers tend to seek out emotionally complex and intense books, staying loyal to a few beloved genres. The great actor and author LeVar Burton is my favorite example of an FSDA, a reader especially dedicated to the imagination-expanding genres of science fiction and literary fiction (you can search for his profile on Fable!).Every day on Fable, FSDA readers bravely embark on reading quests through the shadows. Many FSDAs enjoy following trusted world-builders as they navigate difficult emotional terrain. Sarah J. Maas, Caroline Peckham, and Jennifer L. Armentrout are likely among the favorite writers of FSDAs on Fable.FSDA readers typically form loyal bonds with both authors and genres, no matter what books they end up reading.

Meet some FSDA readers

In my post on Fable For You feed, I met hundreds of FSDA readers and learned more about what makes this reading style special.

“These often world-changing (or world-ending) adventures remind us to not only enjoy moments in life when we can, but also, no matter how things get, tomorrow is another day to try again. Never give up. Never give in. Never stop trying. Never stop believing. And never ever give up hope.”Sierra Sugar

“I love FSDA because it often holds the heaviest truths in the most unexpected places. These stories dive deep into trauma and healing, wrapped in character arcs that feel brutally honest yet redemptive. The worlds—though labeled ‘dark’—are often lush, dreamy, and strangely comforting, offering a kind of beauty and hope that feels more real than reality itself.” CozyMomChronicles

“I’m constantly seeking strange, dark, emotional, and deeply intellectual work. I need both sides of my brain to work hard on a book.”Tanner Volz

What kind of books do FSDAs like to read?

Even though the word “Dark” is at the heart of this BookAura, FSDAs often love books that bring a healthy dose of humor to heavy topics. Some FSDA readers rated books like "Dear Girls" by Ali Wong and "The Dating Plan" by Sara Desai higher than the average Fable reader, revealing a special appreciation for laughter in the dark. And let’s not forget the rebellious streak. FSDAs on Fable have given hundreds of five-star ratings to books like "Sunrise on the Reaping" by Suzanne Collins and "Fearless" by Lauren Roberts—books about bravery in the face of oppression.Through all these stories, FSDA readers, you (and your favorite authors) show the rest of us how to face our own challenges with resilience and resolve.
