Why Was the Marine Biology Book Club Started?

“I wanted to create a community where we could send recommendations, stay up to date on current books and topics, and learn together,” said Kendra Nelson, the founder of the Marine Biology Book Club on Fable. She told us that many of her followers recommended starting a book club because she posts bookish content on her platforms.

"A big reason I love these types of books now is it allows me to explore different areas of marine science. I will likely never explore the deep sea. I am not a deep-sea biologist by any means but it still fascinates me. Picking up books like 'The Brilliant Abyss' by Dr. Helen Scales and 'Below the Edge of Darkness' by Dr. Edith Widder let me explore and learn from that dark marine ecosystem. I also find myself learning so much from these books and as a scientist I just love absorbing new information and viewpoints."

What is The Anthropocene Reviewed About?

“The Anthropocene Reviewed” began as a podcast that you can listen at WNYC Studios.Scientists have dubbed our current time as the "Anthropocene," or the period of Earth history when human beings began to alter the environment significantly. Green looks at humanity's influence on our planet, on both large and small scales. The pieces touch on pivotal moments in John Green’s life, some of them detailing his experience living through the COVID-19 pandemic. An excerpt from his introduction to the essays explains:

"We are so powerful that we have escaped our planet's atmosphere. But we are not powerful enough to save those we love from suffering. I also wanted to write about some of the places where my small life runs into the large forces of the Anthropocene ... I find much to fear and lament. But I also see humans working together to share and distribute what we collectively learn, and I see people working together to care for the sick and vulnerable. Even separated, we are bound up in each other. As Sarah told me, there are no observers; only participants."

Meet the Founder of the Marine Biology Club on Fable

Since she was a child, Kendra Nelson has been a reader, and as she developed her field of study, her book preferences shifted. Younger Kendra loved A Series of Unfortunate EventsWarrior Cats, and Percy Jackson. Now, while she occasionally reads fiction, she spends most of her reading time with scientific nonfiction. Kendra Nelson has a BSc in biology with an emphasis in marine science. She spent her undergrad studying in Hawai’i and working as a lab assistant at a marine biology wet lab and a teaching assistant. “I participated in research projects, took care of fish every day, and helped educate on marine science & ocean conservation. I have a primary research interest in ctenophores and echinoderms,” she told us. Kendra currently works as a content creator and social media manager for brands and organizations that focus on the ocean. “My current goal is to use my social media platforms to inspire aspiring marine biologists and help them on their journey into this field.”
