The Mental Wellness Benefits of Book Genres

One recent study proved that you should be reading the book genres you love, rather than struggling through books that don’t interest you. Some groundbreaking research in the Reading and Writing journal outlined how your favorite book genre can improve your mental well-being. A team of researchers at Concordia University discovered that people who read for enjoyment had better verbal abilities and scored higher on language tests. "It's always very positive and heartening to give people permission to delve into the series that they like," explained Professor Sandra Martin-Chang, one of the researchers who led this important study.

"I liken it to research that says chocolate is good for you: the guilty pleasure of reading fiction is associated with positive cognitive benefits and verbal outcomes."

Discover Book Recommendations in Every Genre

Reading for 30 minutes every day is a simple yet powerful way to improve mental wellness. Stories promote empathy, social perception, emotional intelligence, and other cognitive abilities that can lead to better mental health. Book categories like Sleep Better, Self-Improvement, and Manage Your Health will all help you reap these benefits of reading directly. We also have topics that can change your work life, with categories like Artificial Intelligence, Venture Capital, or Social Justice. No matter what genre you love, our category pages focus on the mental wellness benefits of the book recommendations. People are struggling to make time to read or find books they truly enjoy. In “Read This Next,” author and editor Howard Mittelmark reminds us that we need to find books we love and read them every single day.

“While it is all very well to expect people to selflessly read, purely in order to keep the book on life support, that is unrealistic. No, we need you to selfishly read, for pleasure, while also patting yourself on the back for the good you are doing.”
