How To Find More Time To Read

Every week, somebody on Fable asks how they can make more room for reading in their lives. It's a great question, and I always learn new tips and tricks from our community. Personally, I always tell people to try audiobooks. Once I had kids, I lost hours of reading time. I managed to claim some of that back by listening to audiobooks while driving, walking the dog, or doing my chores.

Creating space for books in your life

I also asked my fellow editors for advice, and then Fable readers shared their own thoughts.

"I’ve been working on how much I consume social media when I noticed it was the main interference in my reading time. Instead of immediately checking my phone when I wake up, I will read a minimum of 10 pages of my book. Same thing before I go to bed! It’s difficult in the beginning, but after a few days, it starts to become a habit!" — Cameron Capello

"I’m a big fan of audiobooks because they let me get so much more reading done. I can listen while doing other things, and it’s surprisingly relaxing to go on a walk while listening to an audiobook. It’s also important to be mindful of what I’m doing when I’m not reading. If I’m scrolling on my phone, I’m going to cut that time and replace it with reading."— Hayley Dennings

"I know how difficult this will sound, but it’s so incredibly worth it. Trade screen time for reading time. When you want to reach for your phone to browse on TikTok, grab a book instead and read a few pages. It’s great for your reading goals and also for your health!"— Desiree Worrall-Belanger

"I barely watch TV anymore, and unplugged from most social media (except Fable, of course). This was the biggest gamechanger for me."— Erika Vincent

"Bring your book with you. sneak pages in on the train, in waiting rooms, whenever you think to scroll - pick up your book instead. (and e-books make this easier!)"— Brie

"I bring my iPad/Kindle App and read while on the treadmill. I also squeeze in e-reading during times I'm waiting or instead of doom scrolling social media. During pedicures I bring my paperback."— Brodie

"Audiobooks definitely help me. For me, it's weird because I'll be in a phase where I'm reading a lot or I read a bit and then never touch a book for months. With an audiobook, I can listen to it and do other things like chores or when I'm working." — Ivy

"I set a timer for half an hour and do at least one reading session. i read on my lunch breaks and audiobooks are great when you're out or doing something."— Ana Salvatore

"I set a goal of reading one chapter a day. By creating a small and attainable goal for myself, it feels less intimidating and I'm less likely to get in a reading slump. I'll often read more than one chapter a day and enjoy it but making daily reading a habit makes it easier to remember."— Gianna
