How do you avoid brain rot in your own life?

Brain rot — the mental deterioration that you feel after excessive social media consumption — has been named Oxford Word of the Year.
How do you avoid brain rot in your own life?
Personally, I have a strict rule that I cannot scroll while in bed.On the For You feed in the Fable app, our community shared hundreds of ways to combat this terrible side effect.Vanessa Opal June: "Mindful Scrolling: I focus on being intentional about why I'm on social media. Am I seeking information or just passing time?
Digital Detox: I schedule regular breaks from
social media, especially before bed.
Create a Tech-Free Zone: I designate specific areas in my home as tech-free zones; my bedroom and art/creative space are sacred unplugged spaces in my home (I have a ereader for the room, but I do not access anything but my books on it)."Niki: "I'm actually no longer on social media except Fable!"JeanieGreenie: "Fable has turned off social media brainrot for me and enabled book brainrot aka l've become obsessed with finding new books that I'll inevitably never have time for except like 1% of them (* But a happy trade-off from the social media brainrot."Emily: "I learn something new every day to keep away brain rot. I will find a topic and research it or listen to an educational podcast :)"Rose: "I have shut off notifications to all social media, or completely deleted accounts. I only have Facebook and Instagram now, though I'm probably going to be deleting those as well soon. Fable doesn't count to me, it has books lol.
I also have made an effort to replace my "mindless" time with video games. They aren't exactly mindless, but they have replaced complete brain rot with something more engaging."Carine: "I analyze everything I see."Notkin: "I don't watch or read the news. Fable is the only social media I use. Read, take walks, one on ones with friends, etc."Animelvr01: "I do not start the morning on my phone and I put it up at 10pm to wind down with a book."Cornelius Van Ess: "I started using the daily time limits on my social media apps (Fable not included). It's made a noticeable impact in my mood and function."Joey: "Read a book of course."Gg: "Leaving social media completely in 2014 (except Fable ofc) has done so much good for my mental health."Karina: "I used to read a LOT on my phone. I'm trying to slowly get away from reading on my phone to reading physical books as it's harder for me to go on social media."Hannah: "If I notice I'm spending too much time mindlessly scrolling on my phone, I delete whatever app I'm doing it on so the temptation isn't there. I try to use that hyper focused energy to learn something new, read, make art, spend time outside etc. I've been on a doom scroll detox for a couple weeks now, and it's really helped my mental health."Autumn: "I have locks on my social media apps and video watching apps that kick me out after l've used my time limit (yes I have to treat myself like a toddler)."Oyinda: "I have "instagram days" and "no instagram days". So l only go on the app every other day. Also, on the days I go on, l limit my use to 30 minutes (even though I go over sometimes)."Destiny: "I have a ton of hobbies. Movies, puzzles, reading, I'm working on my own novel, photography, coloring, walking, and not being in my house. If I go places or out with someone, chill with a friend or sit outside in nature I don't really touch my phone."Clstrife: "I tend to go out for walks and listen to audiobooks or music. The walks are 2 hours and are shown to help improve mental health and physical health. Something of which social media does the opposite.
Every once and awhile, I do internet detoxing."DDeMaioSmith: "Three small things l've done: 1, moved my social apps to the third page of my Home Screen, 2, turned off the notifications bubbles on my social apps, 3, all my notifications set to go silent when I'm driving, walking the dog, and from 9pm-7am. l find I less inclined to check my phone/social media obsessively when I don't know what I'm missing."Heather: "No scrolling in bed and no social media use at least 2 hours before bed. My sleep focus starts at like
7:30 pm every night."Check out other tips to avoid brain rot on Fable's For You feed.
