Join the Ebony Book Club on Fable!
The Ebony Magazine Publishing Book Club will begin with a community discussion of Jason Mott’s newest novel, “Hell of a Book.” This timely story follows one author’s journey through a country that’s being torn apart by the brutal racism of police violence. “I want readers to find themselves in this book. I want readers to recognize that the discussions that occur in this book are important for everyone,” Mott said in an interview with Ebony. The book club will be moderated by Porsha Olayiwola, a poet, writer, performer, educator, curator, and the current poet laureate for the city of Boston. The book club will announce a new book monthly to be read and discussed on Fable. Notable guests will moderate author events throughout the year, and the book club will read across genres, from fantasy to memoirs to finance, offering something for every reader.Belonging: A key value at Fable
In my career as a leader, I’ve learned the importance of making people feel like they belong inside my organizations and teams. If someone feels alienated or unable to contribute, you will lose them. Stories are the most powerful way I know to show people that they belong. In a landmark 1990 essay called “Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors,” literature professor Rudine Sims Bishop reminded us that all readers deserve to discover themselves in stories. She is now remembered as “the mother of multicultural literature” and wrote these inspiring words:“Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of the larger human experience. Reading, then, becomes a means of self-affirmation, and readers often seek their mirrors in books.”
Once readers can see themselves in a story, they will know that they belong.Ebony and Fable – A shared commitment to diversity
