Iconic Alcoholics

A collection of gripping biographies charting the rise and fall of literary luminaries like John Cheever and Dorothy Parker, who battled demons as they wrote unforgettable works.Curated by legendary humorist David Sedaris, author of “Calypso,” “Me Talk Pretty One Day,” “Holidays on Ice,” “Naked,” and, most recently, “The Best of Me.”

“I’m always looking for the moment when the subject comes into his or her artistic self, when they’re ‘born’ in a sense. It’s equally fascinating when the subject self-destructs, and that, I suppose, is why I found these books to be so brutally compelling.”

Stories of Resilience

A Fable Folio collecting stories of courage and endurance by authors Laura Hillenbrand, Colson Whitehead, Sue Monk Kidd, and more. Curated book recommendations by long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad, an author who pushed human limits with an epic swim from Cuba to Florida and a record-breaking swim around Manhattan. After serving as a sports broadcaster for more than 30 years, she wrote the memoir “Find a Way” about her amazing life.

“These six books I’ve chosen for my Folio are profound stories of courage, at a challenging time when many of us are reflecting on how to thrive and define ourselves by our highest life values.”

Short Story Masters

A Folio of short story collections by great writers like Bryan Washington, Alice Munro, Juliana Wang, and Haruki Murakami. Curated by Mimi Lok, who won the 2020 PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for her debut short story collection, “Last of Her Name.” She’s also the founding director of Voice of Witness, a human rights and oral history nonprofit that amplifies marginalized voices.

“A great short story is like a great song—it has the power to be an instant mood changer.”

The Immigrant Story is an American Story

A collection of unforgettable book recommendations, including titles by Maxine Hong Kingston, Sandra Cisneros, and Chimamanda Ngozi.Curated by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, a poet, activist, and writing teacher with work published in the Atlantic Monthly, The New Yorker, and more than 50 anthologies. Her many celebrated works include the novels “Before We Visit the Goddess” and “Oleander Girl.”

“Powerful, heartrending, and magical, these books will remind you that immigration is etched deep into the American story.”

Magical Realism 101

A Fable Folio about a literary movement that colors everyday life with fantastical elements, including masterpieces by Salman Rushdie and Toni Morrison, alongside other classics of this literary genre. Curated by Joe Meno, author of “Marvel and a Wonder,” “Office Girl,” “The Boy Detective Fails,” and, most recently, “Between Everything and Nothing.” He’s won the Nelson Algren Literary Award, a Pushcart Prize, and a Great Lakes Book Award.

“Magical realism offers us the opportunity to appreciate the unknown and find a sense of possibility in the midst of our own uncertainty.”
