What is Ramona the Brave about?

"Ramona the Brave" is the third book in the Ramona series by Beverly Cleary.Beverly Cleary's beloved series centers around six-year-old Ramona Quimby on her journey to prove her bravery. When her older sister, Beezus, is made fun of by students in her class, Beverly heroically stands up for her. Instead of thanking her, Beezus is infuriated that Ramona embarrassed her in front of her peers, and the two cannot stop fighting. Ramona's mother decides the only way to control their bickering is to add an extra bedroom in the house where the two will take turns sleeping. In addition to the sibling rivalry, Romana has just entered the first grade. Convinced that her teacher Mrs. Griggs doesn't like her, Ramona's bravery begins to dwindle as she continues to get in trouble. Ramona struggles to keep her spirits high between destroying her nemesis, Sarah's school project, and throwing her shoe at a growling dog. But in the end, Ramona remembers how special the bond she and Beezus have and regains her bravery. Read more of Cleary's books on Fable!type: embedded-entry-inline id: 50yra8efAeanu8PbovMsnW

Book Reviews for Beverly Cleary

Read this New York Times article on why Beverly Cleary's books stand the test of time!Judy Blume, author of Are You There God It's Me, Margaret, recalls discovering Cleary for the first time.

"When her own children were young, Blume would go to the library and come home with armloads of books, and then put them into piles: “Most of them went into the ‘I don’t want to write books like these, they bore me’ pile,” she recalled. “Then I came to Beverly Cleary and I fell off the sofa, I was laughing so hard. I thought, oh my God, I want to write books like this.” (Excerpt taken from The New York Times)

Roger Sutton, the editor of The Horn Books, says

"She gets very close to satire, which I think is why adults like her, but she’s still deeply respectful of her characters — nobody gets a laugh at the expense of another. I think kids appreciate that they’re on a level playing field with adults.” (Excerpt taken from The New York Times)
