9 novels in verse that you'll never forget

Novels in verse
Back in college, I tried to write a long private detective poem. At the time, I was obsessed with hardboiled novels and epic poetry, so it seemed like a good idea to combine them. How hard could it be to write a novel in verse?Super-duper hard, I quickly discovered. Every single stanza came crashing down as I struggled to keep the rhythm, rhyme, and plot spinning at the same time. Thankfully, others have been willing to take on the challenge. We live in a golden age for novels in verse, as brilliant writers have turned to the novel in verse to tell all kinds of stories. They make for brilliant audiobooks as well!

Crank by Ellen Hopkins

One of the most difficult books I’ve ever read, this is the story of a gifted high school junior who struggles with drug addiction. Hopkins’ poetry turns the experience into heartbreaking verse as a wild, ecstatic ride turns into a struggle through hell.

Love That Dog by Sharon Creech

The story of how one boy named Jack finds his voice with the help of a teacher, a pencil, some yellow paper, and of course, a dog.

Written by an award-winning slam poet, this is the story of an Afro-Latina heroine who tells her story with blazing words and powerful truth. A young girl in Harlem discovers slam poetry in this powerful novel in verse about identity and finding one's voice.

Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhhà Lai

This is the moving story of one girl’s year of change, dreams, grief, and healing as she journeys from one country to another, one life to the next.
