Bio

Théophile Gautier (1811–1872) was a French poet and novelist. His finely sculpted verse influenced the symbolist poets. As a journalist in Paris, he became a leading art and theatre critic. His fiction gained a reputation for being alluring and tantalizing, and sometimes even horrifying.
